Too Cute Tuesday: Pom Poms

Too Cute Tuesday involves fun friends, a cheap craft, and a cool cocktail. To get involved, check us out on Facebook or contact Nicole

So there's this fun hat party I might be going to at the end of the month and I thought that a pom-pom might be just the way to do it without having to buy a new hat. Enter Too Cute Tuesday for my excuse to make it. And since I have a feeling I'm starting a cold, a cocktail with orange juice might be a good idea for me. Let's craft!

Materials
Cardboard
Scissors
Two round things (one large and one small) or a compass (click here if you have no idea what I'm talking about
Yarn

Cocktail of the Night
The Gilbert:
2 shot of vodka, 1 shot of club soda, and orange juice. Add lime if desired.

Dorrie's pom-pom came out well because 1) she used thick yarn and 2) she has much more natural crafting talent than I do.

1. Head to Craft Central with yarn and a vision. Get directions from a kid's website to ensure they will be super easy to follow. Pour cocktail and find some cardboard, though not necessarily in that order.

Too Cute Tuesday: Lava Cakes

Something about this rainy gross weather in Maine has made me pretty ravenous. Good thing was this was the week for lava cakes at Too Cute Tuesday.

My friend Kate had sent me a link to what I thought were lava cakes until yesterday when I realized they were whiskey cupcakes. This is what happens when I don't read carefully. Sorry Kate, we'll definitely make them another time but I had been advertising lava cakes on the Too Cute Tuesday Facebook page for two weeks, so I sort of had to do them! Good news is I was able to cover my gaff by finding a recipe for lava cakes on Foodista.

Dorrie took our little fun cakes out of the oven... and we were surprised that it actually worked!

The effort was coordinated over email today. Everyone was so contributory. "I have a port that was made for chocolate!" Jen said. "How about Frangelico for the cocktail?" Sue added. How about those being great fillings for our lava cakes in addition to being good things to drink?!

Materials
3-4 oz chocolate chips
3/4 of a stick of butter (for chocolate), rest of butter for ramekin greasing
4 eggs, 2 whole eggs and 2 yolks
2/3 c. flour
1.5 c. confectioners sugar
pinch of salt
ramekins
various liquors (for filling)
bowl and whisk (or mixer if lazy)
bain-marie to melt chocolate and butter (or microwave if lazy)

Are these for our craft-related cocktail or for the fillings of our cakes? How about both!

Cocktail of the Night: Frangelico and milk, served on ice.

1. Gather in kitchen. Preheat oven to 450 and chat about the day for a few minutes. Let's bake!

Too Cute Tuesday: Morsbags

Too Cute Tuesday involves fun friends, a cheap craft, and a cool cocktail. To get involved, check us out on Facebook or contact Nicole.

Who doesn't love it when crafting is part of a larger movement? When Meg (friend and craft enthusiast on Vinalhaven) alerted Too Cute Tuesday of the Morsbag movement ('socialable guerilla bagging'), we wanted to join in.

Morsbag seeks to empower people to create their own bags in an effort to cut down on use of plastic shopping bags. You make them and give them to people (and yourself if you want).

Materials:
Fabric (18" by 4" sections, 18" by 20" sections- 2 of each)
Sewing machine
Iron and ironing board
Thread
Pencil
Tape measure
Straight edge

Click here for the pattern! (a one page, relatively easy to follow .pdf you can print off or pass on)

Cocktail of the Night: Seadog Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale (Sorry folks, getting my sewing machine down from the top of my closet was challenge enough for the evening)

1. Gather supplies. Observe that this may take the longest time of anything you are going to do this evening. Print off pdf of instructions. (Sorry environmental folks, easier to pass around the table that way! I'll write on the back of the paper though, promise.)

Too Cute Tuesday: Mardi Gras Masks

Too Cute Tuesday is a weekly event that involves a craft, a cocktail, and a friendly get together. Join us each week for a different inexpensive craft. Currently there are TCT chapters in Bar Harbor, Maine and Saint Louis, Missouri. If you want to join in on the fun, check out Facebook or contact Nicole.

Mardi Gras always makes me proud to be a French gal. The whole joie de vivre culture, not to mention music, food, and drink, well, it's a fun time no matter what culture you're from.

Too Cute Tuesday ends up being on Mardi Gras every year (Fat Tuesday) and this Mardi Gras, we made masks and drank hurricanes in addition to listening to traditional music and eating gumbo beforehand. If you want to follow my whole menu, I modified this gumbo recipe by adding scallops and sausage to it (and omitting less exciting ingredients like celery) and I modified this tarte au sucre recipe to include a bit of vanilla extractI also made ployes to go with the gumbo, an Acadian tradition. All in all, in addition to a fun craft night with cocktail, there was a meal with dessert and it was all pretty authentically French.

Laissez les bonnes temps rouler!

Jen and I, being goofballs with our final products. but behind those masks is a lot of pride in our work.

Materials:
Exacto knife
Takeout chopsticks (for mask handles)
Scissors
Fabric, old costume jewelry, construction paper, ribbon (for decoration)
Glue gun (for hardcore gluing)

Sue could only stay an hour because she had to run an experiment but look at what she managed to make, and how much fun she managed to have. Now that's the spirit!

Cocktail of the Night: Hurricane (invented in New Orleans, here's where I got the Pat O'Briens cheat recipe)

1.5 oz. light rum
1.5 oz. dark rum
1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. fresh lime juice (NOT Rose's or RealLime)
1/4 cup passion fruit juice, or 1 tablespoon passion fruit syrup
1 tsp. superfine sugar
1 tsp. grenadine

Shake ingredients, serve on ice.

1. Serve happy participants food. I guess I can make good soup after all! Pour hurricanes to go with. Ahhh...

It's so funny that in the past week, about five people have told me how great Too Cute Tuesday crafts are for kids (minus the alcoholic beverage, of course). Turns out Jessica (she's crafted with us before) is going to do some of these crafts with an after school program at the Reach School. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Tonight's craft has been requested by Dorrie's nieces and, since it was done by me solo (and badly) about a year ago, we thought it was worth another more fun attempt. Dorrie, Jen, Izzy, and Sophie joined Nicole for the fun this particular Tuesday. Here's how it went:

Izzy has a modified version of the cocktail...in a disco glass. Fun!

Sometimes, you just know you are going to need to do something easy. Enter this week's Too Cute Tuesday, inspired by ReadyMade magazine's snow globes. (Click through to see their cute end products!)

What better craft to not only salute our blustery couple of weeks but to finally do a craft involving glitter? Add a snowy cocktail and we've got ourselves a night!

What happens when you recycle an old salsa jar and an old Christmas ornament and add glitter? You have yourself a snow globe. Shake it, Sue!

What? Does my puppet actually look good? I'm as surprised as you are!

The Saint Louis branch of our club was making sock puppets so we thought it'd be fun to do the same.

And since last week, I processed 30 pounds of organic blueberries, we thought the cocktail should involve them. Tasty antioxidants and a silly craft. Could we have more fun?

Too Cute Tuesday (TCT) is a weekly event on the Breaking Even blog that involves friends, crafting, and a cocktail. Every week it's a different, inexpensive craft to make and a different, fun cocktail to keep things social. If you have an idea for a craft or otherwise want to participate, contact Nicole.

Today, there was a huge snowstorm. Being that I work from home and didn't have to go anywhere, I just got to hear about it all over the internet. Sure enough, I went to walk to the gym and found almost a foot of snow on my front step.

Most of the Too Cute Tuesday crew went home after work to get off the roads and shovel the snow away from their respective residences. This TCT, I spent some quality time with myself, some special hot chocolate and with an easy project. Ahhh, Nicoleitude...Like solitude, only better.

Solitude? Not so much. I prefer to think of it as Nicoleitude when I craft alone...

The French have given many wonderful things to society: pain au chocolat, coq au vin, and more relevant to Too Cute Tuesday, the art of decoupage.

Did someone say 'decoupage'? Jessica came ready with scissors and Britney Spears media.

At Craft Central, we were joined by the fabulous Jessica, the other Nicole (ie not the author of this blog), and Nicole's two kiddos Sophie and Bella.

Too Cute Tuesday: Wine Glass Charms

Every week it's a different, inexpensive craft to make and a different, fun cocktail to keep things social. If you have an idea for a craft or otherwise want to participate, contact Nicole. Is that a Wordpress wine charm sitting on a recycled computer motherboard coaster? Nicole's house is now just a little geekier.

This Tuesday was a quiet one here at Craft Central. With everyone out with family, or on dates, or just staying inside and safe from subzero temperatures and strong winds here in Maine, I (Nicole) crafted alone this evening.

Realizing earlier in the week that we had an abundance of glass beads in our stash, I tried unsuccessfully to think of a creative way to use them. Stuck, I took the predicament to the Facebook page for ideas. Jodi of Living The Road Less Traveled recommended I make bookmarks, sun catchers, or decorative glass tags (for parties). Kelly at Almost Frugal seconded the notion of wine glass tags, suggesting I use hook earring bases as the part that loops onto the rim of the glass. TCTers are so smart!
